How Many Bicycles do Cyclists Need to do Everything and Go Everywhere?! And the Bike that Revolutionized Cycling — Fit Recovery

Had to share this post! So, how many bikes does one really need to do everything and go everywhere? Team Valdes still hasn’t figured it out, but we sure do love collecting and riding them! As far as we’re concerned, there is no such thing as “too many bikes!”

Check the whole post out, below, at Fit Recovery!

Two months ago I had all of the bikes I’d ever need. I’ve got a mud bike, a mountain bike, a racing road bike and a rain road bike, and a tandem (for rides with my wife or daughters). I could go anywhere and do anything. Or so I thought. Then we, my wife and […]

Let’s Recap…

Long time no write, I know! What can I say except life is cRaZy busy! It’s been a cRaZy summer so let’s recap, shall we….

First, the cRaZiEsT of all things happened to #teamvaldes this summer! Take a look:

IMG_4169

We are expecting a new recruit! 🚼

If you didn’t read Momma Valdes’ bad tri experience back in June, read it here. If you did, then this picture above explains why she had such a bad experience… she was pregnant and didn’t even know it! Crazy, right?!

Anyway, Momma Valdes had so many hopes to continue training throughout her pregnancy and finish all the Mack Cycle Trilogy Series triathlon races, but pregnancy proved to be a powerful force. The feeling of exhaustion, nausea, and the inability to eat, although feeling ravished, was very real during the first trimester. There was also the feeling of not being able to breathe, or catch my breath, during runs which scarred me a bit. Momma Valdes eventually gave in and decided to just listen to her body and go with it.

I ran as much as my body allowed me to during the first trimester…

I continued biking…

but have not swam. 😣

I know, I know! It’s the best excercise for pregnancy, but it has been a hassle to get my exhausted, changing body to the pool! I will get there though! Now, at 5 months, I’m just trying to keep up with some yoga, power walk regularly, and plan to get to the pool this month. Most importantly, I’m just really listening to my body, taking it easy, and eating right!

IMG_4223

I feel HUGE already and can not imagine getting any bigger, but I know I will. The first trimester is always rough for me, but this second trimester is going great. However, I have been slowed down incredibly and I definitely feel it if I overdo myself physically! Just yesterday, the pelvic and sciatic pain was real! Let’s not even get started on the exhaustion that sets in after trying to keep up with the rest of this cRaZy team! It took all of #teamvaldes the whole first trimester to fully process the news of a baby arriving in February, but after the anatomy sonogram we did at 19 weeks, it sank in that this was no joke. Thankfully, everything is going well and we are a bit excited! Momma Valdes has finally given in to the fact that she is no longer training for a distance or endurance race, but for a whole other kind of experience… labor!

Secondly, after a crazy summer of trying to process the fact that Momma Valdes was indeed pregnant and dealing with her first trimester sickies, we had a major hurricane blow right through our area! After several years of being spared any real hurricane, Hurricane Irma decided to remind our area what it’s like. The stress and work was real people! Poppa Valdes has spent about two months working his butt off! He has had so much work! He was out working Saturday as the storm began spinning in and was out to work first thing Monday morning as the storm spun out. He worked 7 days straight, every week, for about a month! The amount of debris and work to be done around the city was insane! More than a month later, there is still debris clean-up being done around the city. We were without power for a week and a half at home. I think it’s safe to say that training was impacted for just about everyone in our area in some way, but for Poppa Valdes, training stopped completely as he worked hard for his family and his clients. To say that we are so thankful and proud is such an understatement!

Oh, and mountain biking…. ha! Boy did that take a hit after Irma!

Now, in late October, things have pretty much settled down.

Poppa Valdes is picking up his training, Big G is back on the Tennis court, training regularly, and Sister G began her intro to gymnastics (a change from dance because Momma Valdes could not keep making that drive this year as she’s growing!). This brings us to…

Thirdly, Big G finally played his first USTA Junior tournament (a small, entry-level affair) and did exceptionally well! We are so proud and he is so driven! We already have our eyes set on the next tournament as he continues to train hard for his own goals. I don’t know how we ended up with such a determined, stubborn, yet driven kid, but we can definitely understand and respect that drive.

Finally, we are currently in the preparatory hours for Poppa Valdes’ Miami 70.3 Ironman race on Sunday! We’ve got posters to make, gear to check and prep, and final purchases to make before the big day; we are all excited for him! It has been a cRaZy summer and few months leading up to this half Ironman race, including a halt to his training due to the hurricane, but we are confident in his ability to push through!

Let’s go Poppa!

Momma Valdes Tri’s Again!

There are good race days and then there are bad race days. It’s just the nature of the beast.

I’ve finally sat down to write about my Mack Cycle Trilogy I experience. It was only my second Sprint Tri. It went well because my overall time was good; there was an improvement… not as significantly as I expected, but an improvement none the less. I contribute my improvement to new gear really, because my transitions were better, but my individual splits weren’t anything to celebrate. My splits were pretty consistent with my first sprint tri, but I was a bit disappointed in that they hadn’t improved as much as I had wanted them to. I placed 4th in my age group, which was great, but my place didn’t matter as much as my individual times. I had been training and was looking forward to better times, but it just wasn’t the day for it.

I had spent a lot of time this month feeling a bit off. Actually, there was quite a few things off for me. Only two days before the race Team Valdes had returned home from a spontaneous week-long getaway. We had spent a few days mountain biking in Santos Mountain Bike Park in Ocala and almost a week in Siesta Key Beach. I was able to continue my training, but wasn’t meeting my nutritional needs too well and just felt “off.” The day before the race, I decided to indulge myself because, after all, it’s just a sprint, and eat whatever came to mind. Unfortunately, that included too much bread and pasta (which I don’t usually eat, but this was one of two or three pastas that I LOVE). I didn’t eat pasta for carb-loading or anything (I know there is no need for that when racing sprints), I just suddenly felt like eating this particular pasta.

As an athlete my food struggles have always been in making sure I consume enough. I’ve never had to diet or restrict myself of anything because I’m naturally a very healthy eater. I love fruits, eat plenty of veggies regularly, love beans, nuts, oats, etc. I don’t even consume coffee regularly! The term, ‘I eat to live,’ perfectly applies to me. I eat because I know I HAVE to, but if I don’t pay attention to it, I can let myself go and NOT eat. When I’m anxious or stressed, I loose my appetite… COMPLETELY! I’ve had many people raise their eyes at the thought of this and others who called it impossible, or ridiculous just because they can’t identify with it or it isn’t your typical “food struggle,” but I can tell you it’s real. I have to be conscious and intentional in making sure I meet my minimum caloric needs. For me, shakes are a God send! I also have to plan, cook in bulk, and prep meals at the beginning of the week to make sure there is always something ready to consume in the fridge that requires a minimal effort. If it requires too much effort, I’ll forego it…. not good. My fitness goals are not to lose weight, but gain some muscle, or tone, and make sure I am becoming faster. Food is critical to this goal! So, my athletic diet has been simply NOT dieting… just eating normally, right, and frequently.

So, pre-race day, I indulged in bread (which I don’t usually do, but hey… it tasted good that night) and ate pasta (which I don’t usually do either just because I’m not a fan). Needless to say, I arrived home that night with very bad abdominal pains to which I am attributing to some type of gluten sensitivity from dinner (I should have known better…. it has happened before), very bloated, and gassy. I went to bed hoping to wake up at 5 AM  fully relieved.

I woke up race day feeling considerably better, but was worried about eating. Instead of eating my usual oatmeal breakfast, I opted for a CLIF Banana Maple Oatmeal pouch (I also opted out of my usual oatmeal because I didn’t plan and prep it the night before… see what I mean?). Right before the race I ate half a Honey STINGER Waffle and consumed some Gatorade. All in all, none of that was my usual pre-training or pre-race food; I usually opt for real foods, not convenient foods.

Anyway, right from the start I wasn’t feeling right. I found myself feeling severely compressed in my race suit.. I mean too tight to breathe! I stopped in the middle of the swim to unzip my race suit and was able to finish the swim. However, I came out of the swim coughing and full of salt water in my nose, throat, everywhere! I felt very congested and my nose kept running throughout the bike. The bike didn’t go too bad, but I felt a bit frustrated in that I felt I wasn’t doing as good as I knew I could. I had taken the Key Biscayne bridge so much more efficiently so many times before! I was spitting up salt water and my nose was a runny mess! As I started out into the run, I once again began to feel severely constricted and found myself tearing my race suit off. I strongly considered tearing off the whole damn suit, but had nothing “down under.” I pushed through the run and even managed to sprint through the finish line, but felt horrible! Something was off. I couldn’t breathe and was very dizzy. It was weird because even though I knew I had pushed, I shouldn’t be feeling so horrible for a Sprint. It was frustrating. It took me several minutes to compose myself, catch my breath, and bring my heart rate back down to normal. As soon as I was able to make the walk back to the car, I went and took of that damn tri suit. I needed to feel loose and breathe! I just wanted to be naked, but opted for the comfy sweats that I arrived in. All I kept thinking about was how constricted I felt and how out of breathe I finished.

The worse part was my times. Triathlon is a race against yourself. It’s not about what place you manage to get in one race. It’s about whether your times are improving, whether you’re getting faster, stronger, better. I knew I could have done so much better, I had done so much better. It just didn’t come together for me that morning.

I wasn’t too hard on myself because as an athlete you know there are going to be days like this (Oh my mama told me, There’ll be days like this, There’ll be days like this… https://play.google.com/music/preview/Ti47pzwfw7rhggxsnooufacjag4?lyrics=1&utm_source=google&utm_medium=search&utm_campaign=lyrics&pcampaignid=kp-songlyrics&u=0#😉). Not every race will go well. There will be bad days in training and in racing. We just have to dust ourselves off and prepare for the next one, and that’s exactly what I’ve done… I got back to training and eating for the next one!

Here’s to hoping for a better race next time around!

XOXO,

Momma Valdes

SHOUT OUT: Team Valdes is SO, SO, SO proud of Jorge Morales (AKA our Jorge) on completeing his very first Sprint Triathlon and taking the first steps towards a healthy, fun, and fit lifestyle! He’s awesome! (pictured above)

Memories from Memorial

Memorial Day weekend came and went…can you believe it? It’s official! Summer is here and in South Florida we are beginning to feel it! The heat is getting intense and when the humidity strikes, you feel like you are melting!

It seems like most South Floridians chose one of two options for their memorial weekend plans: 1 – sun, sand, and salt water (the beach ☀️🌴🌊) or 2 – Orlando. Team Valdes, however, made different plans. In an attempt to have fun with family and friends, while still staying active, Team Valdes spent their long weekend mountain biking and camping at Santos Campground, in Ocala, FL.

Anyone who knows anything about FL mountain biking knows the Santos trails! With about 85 miles of trails, Santos is pretty awesome! It’s only ranked as the #2 trail system in Florida over at singletracks.com… no biggie, really (https://www.singletracks.com/mountain-bike/best_trails.php?new_state_id=390).  At times throughout a ride, it’s even possible to forget that you’re in Florida… that is if it weren’t for the intense heat! Santos offers trails for mountain bikers at every level and age.

This happened to be our first experience camping at the Santos campground and we loved it! Although quite popular, the grounds are small and there are limited sites available, which is why we have friends who reserves spots as early as a year in advance, but it’s well worth it! There were electric and water hookups at all sites and the bathrooms were clean. Pretty much all sites seemed to have some type of shade. However, none of that matters when you consider how amazing it was to always be surrounded by miles of awesome trail!IMG_3373

Team Valdes went as simple as possible and pitched a pop-up tent with an air mattress. The only other necessities were food for survival, a cooler, plenty of fluid, and bikes! Along with great friends, it truly was an amazing weekend made for the memory books!

Sister G, although not a biking enthusiast like the rest of us, rode some easy and flowy beginner trails. She admitted it was a fun and beautiful ride! Big G enjoyed several miles of trail at varying levels of difficulty with an assortment of fun features. His favorite parts included pump tracks, jumps, and freestyle areas (no surprise there!). Momma Valdes didn’t get to ride as much as she would have liked since there always had to be someone available to stay with the princess Sister G, but she did revel in a peaceful, yet euphoric, steady and flowy 10-mile ride on Sunday that she was able to complete thanks to great friends watching over the princess (thank you, Nohe, and Fernanda 😘); She truly enjoyed leaning into her turns and flowing nicely for miles. Unfortunately, Big Poppa Valdes was unable to make it due to work constraints, but that didn’t stop the rest of #teamvaldes from shredding dirt, training hard, and having F-U-N! Santos is a FL mountain biking heaven and all of #teamvaldes will surely be back VERY soon!

Forgive us for the lack of photos, but we had little time for pictures while we were busy making non-stop memories!

One of our favorite family quotes:

“Keeping up and playing with the kids, keeps you feeling like a kid!” – Team Valdes

ALSO: Team Valdes would like to express their deepest gratitude to all the fallen men and women of our country and their families. It is thanks to them that we are able to enjoy so  much today and make such wonderful memories together. Thank you to all the men and women currently serving our country and to their families, for we know the sacrifice is great. We owe our freedoms and our livelihoods to all of them. From the bottom of our hearts… thank you!

Higher Perspective

Teacher: “Why are you late today?”

Student: “I have a very blessed and amazing life.”

Our kids were late to school today….again. I mean, they’re not late everyday. Each semester our kids are late to school anywhere from 3 – 5 times. Honestly, it may be a tiny bit more this final semester as we approach the end of the scholastic year (end of the school year…thank you, Jesus!). What can I say? The weather is awesome here in South FL and the days are getting longer, which equals more fun!

Now, anyone who knows our family and our children know that the Valdes Clan is top-notch; We do a pretty good job of staying on top of life’s balls. Our kids are gifted, honors students (like in principals honor roll) who score above average on their exams, very respectful and obedient (in public and towards anyone who is NOT mom or dad), have either mom or dad ALWAYS available, and enjoy a wide range of experiences. Mom and dad work hard to be great examples, parents, friends, and to provide. We are an average American family. However, we consider ourselves highly unconventional. Let me explain….

We aim to do our own thing. We try not to just follow the crowd for the sake of just going in the same direction as everyone else. We stick to our beliefs and values no matter how disparate it may be to current societal norms. We live everyday focused on a higher perspective, somewhat akin to positivity. Just because everyone is doing the same thing doesn’t make it right… or right for us.

Here are 6 little truths, or realities, that we try to remember everyday:

1 – Tomorrow is never guaranteed for any one of us or any one we love…. 2 hours from now is not even guaranteed! Things happen. Shit happens. That’s life. No one is immune. Mortality is the most equalizing factor in this world.

2 – The only thing we REALLY own is the skin we live in and the memories we make. We came into this world with nothing and we leave this world with nothing. Our house, car, boat, bank account, spouse, child… it can be taken away in an instant. Our grandparents fled Cuba about 50 decades ago after property, business, and all their finances were suddenly stolen from them by a corrupt government. The only thing that is truly ours is the skin we live in and the memories we make.

3 – Everything is crap and replaceable except life. This is why the only true value is in life itself.

4 – Everyone is different, unique, special, amazing, significant, etc.. Accept and respect. Live and let live.

5 – Memories, experiences, people are far more important than material possessions. There will come a day where we must all face our final moments. What will we be most thankful for in those moments? What will we regret having missed out on in those moments? The house we didn’t buy? The new car we never had the chance to obtain? The son we didn’t spend enough time with? The spouse we gave up on too easily? The parent we never forgave? The promotion we missed?

6 – As Americans alone, we are among the richest, and most blessed population in the entire world. The majority of the wold lives in extreme poverty without a third of the access and opportunity that Americans enjoy, and, unfortunately, too often we take it for granted.

Those 6 truths keep us focused on a bigger picture that most of society seems to miss out on. Sure, we understand there are certain social standards that are important and valuable. For instance etiquette does matter, punctuality and professionalism is important, and image does make a difference. But when it comes to raising our children, we have chosen to make an intentional and conscious effort to study their personalities, strengths, weaknesses, interests. With that, we choose to support and encourage their uniqueness… the thing that makes them, them. We encourage them to think outside the box, find another way, stretch the mind a little bit farther. Don’t always accept there is only one right way or one right answer just because you are told that is how it is. Explore other options, possibilities, while ALWAYS focused on the big picture of what should truly be important in this life.

So, in conclusion, we’re sorry our kids are late…again. We know punctuality is important and we know it’s really uncool to disrupt or disturb the class or school with a tardy. We understand you have to cater to the masses, not the individual. Really, we understand it! But honestly, we don’t really give a damn about the masses or the elementary punctuality. What we really value this morning, is the fact that our family experienced the blessing of spending time together last night. Our family got to spend time outdoors… together. We got to each spend time doing the things we cherish like swim, work, play tennis, and love. We got to spend valuable time with an amazing friend that we don’t get to see often enough (we love our Jess). We got to relax in nature! Dad got the opportunity to play ball with his kids and mom had the privilege of kisses and hugs. Our family had an unplanned, spontaneous, and amazing dinner over beautiful scenery… together! So, we went to bed a teeny bit too late for a Monday, but if you look at the big picture, I’d say it was ALL worth it!

What this Momma Valdes and Poppa Valdes really give a damn about is that years from now, our two treasures will be all grown and will have amazing memories like the ones we made yesterday…. memories that they will carry with them for as long as our great God allows!

Here’s to the beautiful ride that is life…. when lived with a higher perspective!

XOXOXO

😘

Where the FAKAWI?!

The 2017 Fakawi Gravel Grinder was a blast and Team Valdes was there for the F-U-N! It was our first year participating in the FAKAWI at Markham Park and we finished wondering why the Hell we hadn’t participated sooner!

IMG_3338

We had heard of the Fakawi ride over the years and seen pictures of the massive turnout, but never had the time to participate while adulting too hard. We also assumed it was way tougher than it actually turned out to be, but I think part of that might have to do with the fact that we’ve been training and riding consistently for some time now. Overall, we loved how the entire South Florida mountain biking community comes together for this large event. One of the reasons we love the mountain biking community is that it’s always so welcoming and family friendly! We have met some awesome people and made so many great friends through the mountain biking community, including amazingly supportive and encouraging biking women like the Hardtail Honies. The atmosphere of the Fakawi is great and we will definitely be participating again, God willing.

Some things we learned for our future Fakawi rides are:

1 – There is a 30 mile option for those wishing to opt out of the whole 50 miles and it’s just as amazing!

2 – Older kids can definitely ride! We didn’t take our 9 year old son with us because we didn’t know if this would be more of an endurance race with people swooshing by or more of a ‘nice ride,’ but we wish we had. Next year we look forward to taking our son with us so he can ride the 30 mile option (he would be 10 then).

3 – Make sure you pack plenty of hydration and necessary snacks for survival! Sometimes aide stations run out of water!

4 – Fakawi route is never posted in advance because it’s left a surprise for the day of, but there’s always an interesting natural challenge.

5 – Prepare to get dirty!

6 – It’s so much FUN! It doesn’t even matter if you ride with friends or by yourself; you’re guaranteed to have a blast if you enjoy being on a bike!

7 – Get ready to meet new people!

Raul and I rode in separate groups as he is obviously a way more skilled and advanced rider than I (those legs!), but he ended up pretty much riding the whole Fakawi by himself. His ‘masculine,’ male brain viewed the Fakawi as more of a race so, he tried to finish his 50 miles as quickly as possible; he really thrives on the pain and push of a physical challenge… men, go figure! I, however, chose to stick to a group of friends and fellow Hardtail Honies that ride more or less at the same level as myself and had previous Fakawi experience. We, however, got stuck in an hour and a half wait in the sun after some wooden bridge structure broke in the middle of the ride. We waited in the heat and masses for our turn to carefully cross, one or two riders at a time. Although a bit frustrating, it’s part of the unexpected appeal of the Fakawi – things happen; get through it, keep going, and finish! IMG_3297Thankfully, I was with friends, but it provided a great opportunity to meet new people! By the time I made it to the 20 mile aide station, Raul called to let me know he had finished his 50 miles!!! 😧

I finished my first 30 miles with friends, who only planned on doing 30 miles so, I ended back at Markham park. Even though I really had my heart set on completing 50 miles, I stuck with my group because I didn’t know the route and didn’t want to get lost on my own out there! However, my stubbornness and determination got the best of me and I went out to complete those last 20 miles on my own. I followed the levy backwards for 10 miles, where there was the BEST aide station (thank you Cycling Quarterly South Florida for being the only aide station with ice AND gatorade), and then turned around for the last 10 miles (thank you Venezuelan Marcos for riding those last 10 miles with me ☺️). All in all, I did it!

50 Fakawi miles for Raul+ 50 Fakawi miles for Yessica =100 Fakawi miles for Team Valdes!!!

Thankfully, there was no rain or mosquitos this year, but lots of sun and heat; You have to ride prepared with arm guards and sunblock or you will burn to a crisp out there! There was only a bit of mud, but it wasn’t too dry out there either. It was only moderately windy up on the levy, but nothing agonizing.

Overall, the general theme and mood of the race was…

“I have no idea where the FAKAWI!!”

[A massive THANK YOU to Bike Link Store in Hialeah for getting our bikes Fakawi ready! They took the annoying sound out of my bike and it hasn’t returned since!😘 Team Valdes fully supports Bike Link! www.bikelinkstore.com
Thank you to the Hardtail Honies for their amazing support and encouragement!]

Happy Mother’s Day!

Here are just 30 reasons to celebrate mom on Mother’s Day (there are SO many more):

  1. She cooks and feeds her family. Although she tries her best to make every meal as delicious and nutritious as possible, there are days that the fact that you got feed anything at all, is a truly testament to her magic and willpower… not to mention love! Bonus if she can manage to pack you a lunch!
  2. She does laundry, making sure there is always something clean to wear. Yes, sometimes the laundry piles up as high as her little nuggets, but it gets done! Sometimes it’s wrinkled, but it’s clean… I mean, it doesn’t smell bad, does it?! She’s the reason whites stay white and colors stay true! What, you thought that was just the Oxi-Clean?! Give me a break!
  3. She does the dishes. She makes sure there is usually clean utensils and plates to eat with… at least when there’s food.
  4. Thanks to numbers 2 & 3 above, she’s the reason the washing machine, dryer, and dishwasher runs daily… literally!
  5. She drives her kids around to school, sports, birthday parties and other social engagements, etc… Miami moms especially deserve love for this one because it also means dealing with traffic and many obnoxious drivers that may have bought their licenses on some black market somewhere! There was an unforgettable afternoon Momma Valdes spent 3 hours in her car driving within Miami alone for her little boogers!
  6. She can magically locate whatever you’ve lost…. or dad. She can find anything; its one of her superpowers, along with always knowing when one of her little tyrants are lying 😉.
  7. She helps you succeed in school. This applies for homework help, a study partner, a grade tracker, brainstorm helper, project finisher/completer, etc… She’s basically your part-time teacher.
  8. She’s your biggest fan and #1 cheerleader… the whole family’s. No elaboration needed here.
  9. She tucks you in with sweet kisses and honest chats. Those are the best!
  10. She’s always available and willing to talk…. about anything, honestly.
  11. She forgives you always. Remember that favorite mug you dropped and broke or the time you spilled milk all over, but it turned out ok? Yeah, we all have a memory like that.
  12. She helps you clean up your messes… usually.
  13. She’s full of good advice… even if you don’t want to admit it!
  14. She works too! No matter how many hours she manages work each week, the fact that she can manage to fit that into her schedule apart from her home and family is pretty amazing!
  15. She never stops studying. She may take breaks here and there, but she says there is always something new to learn and the fact that she can pass a course while balancing a family is impressive!
  16. She believes in you and her family even if no one else does.
  17. She protects her family and is always ready to defend them.
  18. She laughs with you.
  19. She dances with you.
  20. She cries with you.
  21. She dreams with you.
  22. She plays with you and takes you on some fun adventures.
  23. She listens.
  24. She worries about you.
  25. She’s always thinking of you.
  26. She takes care of your pet(s). She literally does everything from the bathing, feeding, and training even though she said she wouldn’t.
  27. She takes care of you, or anyone in the house, even herself, when sick. Sometimes this means pulling an all-nighter and then spending the next day on the verge of a caffeine overdose!
  28. She cleans your room for you no matter how many times she swears she won’t touch it anymore and it will be your total responsibility.
  29. She keeps a clean house…. most of the time at least.
  30. She loves you…unconditionally.

There are SO many more reasons to celebrate moms on Mother’s Day! As my son wrote to me, “My mother and I like to rock climb.” We all have a million reasons why moms are so important to us so, don’t forget to celebrate her! Remember, even if she says she doesn’t want anything, a woman is a woman, and every woman wants to feel loved, appreciated, spoiled even. Buy her flowers, balloons, jewelry, take her to a movie, a surprise dinner, buy her a card or better yet, write her a letter from the heart. You don’t have to break the bank to make a woman feel loved.

WARNING! This also applies to husbands! Don’t be the husband that doesn’t buy anything for his wife, mother of his children. Don’t bust out an, “well, I already spent enough on you on your birthday.” Unless you want to start brewing trouble, just DON’T! 😉

Share your reasons for celebrating the mom in your life; We’d love to hear it! 💋

The Ugly Truth About a Tri-Family

Okay, here goes nothing…. I’m about to get real honest here; The Valdes Team home base is usually a mess. No, not the kind of mess where there’s just a little dust because things weren’t dusted one week. I’m talking about tornado kind of aftermath and gym locker room smells!

washday-364714__340

The reality is that it’s damn hard to balance family, work, hobbies, and all the million daily responsibilities that modern society bombards us with. Adulting is just plain HARD, especially when you still feel like a kid at heart and want to have F-U-N with life. It’s a blessing when family help is available or parents have other adults living within the home to help with chores and children, but #teamvaldes never really has that. #teamvaldes grandparents are still too healthy, vibrant, and still have too much zest for thier own lives (damn nutrition and modern medicine, 😆). Although, it truly takes a village to raise children sometimes…. definitely one of the hardest challenges we’ve ever embarked on!

The point is that Team Valdes is just your average 4-person family of two parents and two children trying to balance and achieve it all together. Sure, our home could be emaculate if we just cooked, washed, cleaned, scrubbed, and dusted all day, but when would we swim, bike, run, train, play with the kids, or chauffeur their little privileged butts around town to get them to their hobbies and activities of interest? Our house could smell like a field of lavender just married a grove of Gardenia’s, but the reality is that we sweat EVERYDAY because we all train and practice something EVERYDAY. When it comes to laundry, 75% of it consists of stinky activewear. And we’re just talking about the home; the car will be a topic for another day! 😂

We are a family who is always in and out. The result? It fulfills us… internally. I works for us. We thrive (mentally, physically, and emotionally) on activity and fitness. Not in a weird, obsessive, conceited sort of way, but in a mental, refreshing, ready-to-handle-anything-after-working-out type of way. It makes us happier, healthier. It makes us better spouses, parents, friends. It’s our free, organic medicine. It’s not just the physical aspect, but also the presence outdoors, within nature, the organic part of our world. We’ve always felt there is some strong connection/force/energy between humanity and the natural world that lifts, encourages, touches the spirit, the soul. It’s free therapy and we’ll take a little of it everyday!

Life is full of choices. Team Valdes chooses to spend the limited time in this world doing as much as possible of anything that makes us feel whole, complete. We wake up knowing tomorrow is not a guarantee for either one of us and TRY (it can be hard sometimes!) to focus on the here, now, today. We wake up and choose to love, live, open our eyes to the bright and beauty, and have as much fun along the journey!

It works for us. Everyone is different and everyone’s situations or experiences are different; There is so much beauty in that uniqueness! Find whatever works for you and go for it! Find some beauty amongst the thorn patch, some light within the darkness.  After all, no one really cares and in the end there will always be those who’d rather judge because nothing will EVER be perfect. It would be too easy!

Here’s to sweat, smells, love, laughter, and life! 😘

P.S. Feel free to stop by whenever! If you don’t mind the chaos, we don’t mind it either! Don’t worry, you might just stop by on a good day when everything appears in prefect order.

Oh ye grand Texas!

It’s been a busy month of craziness with Team Valdes, but there have been many accomplishments in one short month! Time for an update….

“[Poppa Valdes], YOU. ARE. AN IRONMAN!” Beautiful words to hear coming from those loudspeakers, dancing within the pumped-up music that welcomes athletes across the finish line! Team Valdes is so proud of their 2-time Ironman!

The face says it ALL! 😂

Texas, turned out to be an amazing experience, even better than the year before. We were all more prepared as we were familiar with the area and knew what to expect. Ironman races are always such a blast and The Woodlands, Texas is a beautiful venue. Race day turned out comfortable; It wasn’t too hot or sunny and it didn’t rain on ‘ parade like last year. The temperature was comfortable as a mild cold front was moving into the area that night (but then again, we Floridians call anything below 75 degrees a cold front, lol). All in all, we are proud to report that Raul’s time was excellent and, most importantly he enjoyed the experience.

Team Valdes is also extrIMG_2839emely proud of the rest of the DALEE Team athletes that also completed the 2017 Ironman Texas, two of them becoming a first time Ironman. We are very proud of the entire team, who exemplifies such an awesome attitude and works so hard throughout the
year. The support of Team Valdes and the DALEE team was on point this year with custom signs and fellow teammates.

Overall, it was a great experience and Team Valdes loved being a part of it! Team Valdes also loved Texas and take it from us… everything really is bigger in Texas!

We’d like to give special thanks to all the race organizers, volunteers, sponsors, and Texas law enforcement for such a smoothly run and well-organized race. Everyone did an awesome job and we didn’t have any negative experiences whatsoever. Also, thanks to La Quinta at Shenandoah, Texas for our comfortable accommodations as we prepared and then celebrated…

We definitely HAVE to give thanks to Taste of Texas, a Houston area restaurant, for the most amazing post race steak dinner, EVER! Special thanks to the manager that was there on Sunday night (4/23/17) who so kindly gave our Ironman free dessert. If you want a quality Texas steak dinner the next time you’re in the area, head on over to them, trust us!

Also thank you to the Omni Hotel in Houston Westside for our great accommodations on Sunday night after the race. The manager on staff there was also very gracious and welcoming giving our children free fish food to feed their beautiful Koi in the most amazing Koi pond we have ever seen…

We also received a free fruit basket and the kids were sent free milk & cookies to our room after the Omni manager found out we had an Ironman Texas finisher. Thank you a million times, Texas, for your hospitality!

Until the next one…..😘

Reality Vs. Dreams

Parenting is a tough business! You do the best you can with what you have and what you know and pray for the best. There are no guarantees in parenting. This is true for every aspect of parenting, including supporting your child’s athletic goals.

Every now and then you come across a young athlete with natural athleticism, natural coordination, and a natural drive, passion to train hard to accomplish what they want. As parents, we want to give our children the most we can. We want to support them all the way, see them happy, see them succeed. We want to provide them with the world! The reality, however, is that we can only give them so much. The reality is that resources are limited, always.

When it comes to parenting, the most valuable resources are time and finances. Children need our time and they rely on our finances, but these are some of our most limited resources. I know families who can provide a significant amount of money for their children, but limited time. I also know families who don’t have significant financial resources, but give their children lots of their time. Then there are the lucky few, I mean VERY few, who can actually provide both. All that is fine and great. It doesn’t really matter one way or the other where we fall because the reality of the matter is that balance is the key to everything in life. We have to come to terms with where we fall and learn to be satisfied, happy with what we have rather, than always looking to what others have or what we want. At the end of the day we need to accept the cards we were dealt and learn to be thankful for where we are. Sure, it could always be better, but then again, it could always be much, much worse. Perspective. Acceptance. Balance.

Recently, we have been struggling with supporting our son in his athletic endeavors. He has tried many sports and enjoys a wide range of outdoor activities, but he is an individual sport kind of kid, like his momma was. He has taken a passion for Tennis, which I admit our family is a little biased towards considering his father was a Tennis coach for some time. Our house was always full of tennis balls and racquets. He was swinging a racquet and hitting balls against the walls inside our home since he was 2 years old. He had a natural coordination and liking for it. Today, at 9 years old, he still hits tennis balls against the walls of his room and could spend hours doing this! He asks to play EVERYDAY. He exhibits a fire to train, to play, to always be out on the court. No one put this in him. No one forces him to be this way. This is who he is, how he was created. This is special because there are two very important things that athletes require: 1 – talent, and 2 – drive, passion, fire. One without the other is useless, but both is like a perfect recipe and it gets noticed.

“He needs more time.”

“Spend some more time on him…Trust me!”

“Just a few more hours a week…You’re going to regret it if you don’t because time flys by and one day you’ll look back and regret that you didn’t!”

“Find a way. If you can’t provide him the extra time, find someone who will. He can do it.”

We hear it all the time. We hear it often. The worst part is that we know they’re right. Our son has the ingredients to be good at his sport of choice. The rest is up to us, as his parents, as his support team. But how much are we willing to give up, to sacrifice ourselves to provide him with more? How much can we realistically provide? The fact is that we are a busy working family with two children. We NEED to work to feed, clothe, and shelter our children. We NEED to work to provide them with the finances to allow them to pursue their interests. Work takes time and I don’t want this family to work itself to the bone, work itself dry and miss out on truly living, to try to provide for the financial means of one’s dream. It also isn’t fair to sacrifice one child for the dreams of another.  I am a firm believer that life needs balance, family needs balance.

My husband would love to provide us all with the world, the moon, the stars, and everything in the galaxy, but at some point he needs to face reality. I know that if he were given the option to provide us all with anything we ever wanted or needed at the cost of him slaving away for the rest of his life, he may very well take it, but the fact is that it still wouldn’t be good enough without him. My husband wants to provide our son with all the personal coaches, trainings, equipment, and possibility that he craves, but is it really everything? At what cost would it come? Would it cost us our family? Would it cost him his own athletic ambitions?

The reality is that no matter how much our son wants success, I know he wants, needs, his family more. He wants, needs, his father more. I think it’s ok to simply do our best and try our hardest, whatever that may be as long as we don’t sacrifice what’s important – our family. With that, there are vital components necessary to making a family work. Each individual’s mental, physical, spiritual, and intellectual health needs to be considered for an overall healthy family.

In the end, we just need to know that we’re trying the best we can, doing everything within our hands, and be satisfied with whatever that means. We need to accept that some things are out of our hands, out of our control, and leave them to God to finish. After all, I am a firm believer that anything meant to be, will be, one way or the other. We can’t let the guilt steal our joy because the reality is that we already have a lot to be thankful for. There is a bigger picture than just our son, the athlete, that we have to focus on and nourish; There is our son, a future man, husband, father, leader, individual, and it’s going to take all of our family to help shape him into the best of all of those roles.

So, here’s to acceptance, balance, and joy today, tomorrow, and always! ❤️
